Blogging: Why and How to Start A Blog

Becoming a blogger is hard work but totally worth it. Below, I share with you why I started a blog and how you can start a blog, too!

How to Start a Successful Blog - The Witty Wife

I have been blogging for about 5 months now. I love it. Absolutely love it. There is some form of release I get from blogging. Like a piece of who I am spills out into words and the world gets to read them. So, I wanted to share my story about blogging and why you should start a blog, too!

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links which means I may receive a small commission if you purchase somethings from the link. Nevertheless, I only recommend items I truly love or enjoy! To read more about my affiliates click here.

Blogging is Flexible.

As a blogger, I am able to make my own schedule, follow my own rules, and share what I want. Since I am still pretty new at this, I am learning. Some new things i am picking up on include SEO optimization, CSS codes, and Affiliate marketing.

Before blogging, I literally had NO IDEA what any of these things were. But now, I sit here typing, thinking of the best keywords, what image to make for Pinterest, and how to design this post to be amazing.

Blogging gives you freedom of expression.

I can do what I want. Again. I can choose what to share, who I share it with, and so on. I love having the ability to give a piece of my world to you, to be able to tell stories and give advice. You can also take your own photos and create a story for others to follow along with.

Blogging gives you drive.

Everyday I wake up, I think about what I can accomplish for that day. From what Facebook groups to post to, to what to great post to start, blogging has given me drive. It has made me want to set higher goals for myself. It has shaped me into a more task-oriented, and organized person.

Blogging can turn into a full-time career.

I have found something I love. And for me, this is big. Why? Because I am a job hopper. There, I said it. I have had many jobs. I have a Bachelors Degree in English and Theatre, but I can’t seem to stay in one place for too long. You know what I mean? I like change. I like being active. With blogging, I can practically be laying upside and writing. I can’t do that at a 9 to 5 work desk. I am determined to make this my career, and you can, too! There are tons of affiliate programs you can join to one day get that full-time income such as Affiliate Window, ShareASale, and Media.net.

Blogging gives you Blogger Friends and a Community.

It has. Besides my amazing friends from college and one from high school, my friendships dwindled just acquaintances. Well, becoming a blogger has given me a community. Somewhere I belong. Within this community, you are able to connect with people in your niche, people who have the same goal and support you ! Actually, I started a Facebook group specifically for Lifestyle and Travel Bloggers with a new blogger friend, Krista! You can see her site here.

So, are you ready to get started on your own blog?

10 steps to starting a successful blog:

  1. Decide on domain name/niche
  2. Sign up for hosting
  3. Create website email
  4. Get a great template/design (you can always change this later)
  5. Install WordPress Plugins
  6. Join Facebook Groups
  7. Learn Pinterest and convert to Business Profile
  8. Write Great Content!
  9. Add affiliate links
  10. Promote across Social Media πŸ™‚

Oh! And don’t forget to a Free Ultimate Blog Checklist!

First, sign up for hosting. This is where you will create your domain name, email, and more. I recommended using Bluehost. They are super reliable and easy to use and right now it only cost $3.95/month which is a steal!

I personally use WordPress and prefer it. WordPress is super easy to manage, design, and add plugins and widgets. Plus, Bluehost offers one click install! How can you go wrong with that??

Then, installing plugins is super easy. On Friday, I will share with you 5 amazing WordPress Plugins for your blog! But for now, browse the WordPress plugin section and pick ones that have a high number of users.

Like mentioned before, join Facebook groups. Here is 5 I truly recommend for new lifestyle bloggers:

Bloggers2Brands

Blogging 101

The Blogging Squad

Bridging Blogs Network

Rymixers Club

Now, write great content and add affiliate links!

Go sign up for programs in your niche. Want to partner with some awesome brands? Look into Affiliate Window. Want to promote products and businesses? Turn to ShareASale! There are thousands of options out there πŸ™‚

And lastly, to be successful with your blog, you must promote across all your social media channels! I usually post sneak peeks to my posts on Instagram twice before I hit publish, three times to Twitter, and once to my Facebook page. Then, after you hit publish, make sure you post it to each of your outlets! For Pinterest, pin your post right away to your related boards. Then, pin later onto group boards πŸ™‚

Blogging has totally changed my life in so many ways and I am so thankful. And though I may be tearing up a bit writing this, it is true. Blogging has become a big part of my life and I am so excited to see where it takes me.

  2. Writing great content is definitely the key! So many people start out because it just sounds fun but they don’t actually have much to say. Once they find their voice, I enjoy the blog a lot more! πŸ™‚

  3. I am pinning this post. I am still toying with the idea of effective affiliate marketing. I don’t want it to look or read anything other than natural.
