A Letter To My College Professors

College is an amazing experience. Not only does it allow you the chance to enhance your skills, it brings some of the most amazing people into your life, such as college professors.

While in Michigan, I had the chance to visit my Alma Mater. And while walking the same sidewalks I did for those classes and exams for four years, I was brought back memories of my time there. More importantly, I was overwhelmed with thankfulness for some of my college professors.

THANK YOU LETTER TO MY COLLEGE PROFESSORS

First off, I must just say thank you. I believe God puts people in our lives for a reason and I am sure He gave me some of the most amazing people. My college professors were unlike any others. They were persistent, friendly, knew me by first and last name, and cared about me as a person, not just a student. They taught me many lessons in which I will forever carry with me. Three professors in particular will always hold a special place in my heart. This one’s for you!

Things My College Professors Taught Me

Never give up.

Plain and simple. Life will get hard and things won’t be the way I thought they would be. But you taught me to never give up on myself or my dreams. From those late nights in the theatre where I would try my damnest to complete a set design project to the late nights typing playscripts in the library, you reminded me never to give up.

Always try your best.

Even if my best was not amazing, you encouraged me to always try my best.. I remember a time when I was working for countless hours on my senior project, bound down by the anxiety and stress of “the final show.” Not only did you encourage me to continue, but you reminded me how great of a student I was and how trying my best was all that mattered. And that semester I succeeded with flying colors.

I will figure it out.

My most favorite lesson. You reminded me that I am young and that I will figure it all out. You also reminded me that even though I may not using my degree in the corporate world that I am still valuable. Also, you constantly let me know that everyone starts somewhere.

Always know your value.

Constantly, as students at my college, we were encouraged to engage in activities, double major, and to make great connections. My college professors taught me of the importance of knowing how valuable each person is. And, that the value of a college degree and college experiences are priceless. From the hours I spent making a project perfect to the moments I thought I was a failure, they inspired me to keep going.

Follow your passion.

Probably the best lesson you taught. My dreams may change and with that, some of my passions, too! And that is okay. Even if the job I am doing now doesn’t pay that great. It doesn’t matter. Whatever my passion is, I can do it. You remind me that we must work in this society, but when you are doing your passion, it isn’t work

You tell is how it is.

Life is hard. Work is hard. And things don’t always turn out the way we may want them. So thank you. Thank you for being a constant reminder that I can and will succeed in this life. For reminding me that my career doesn’t shape who I am. Thank you for pushing me to do my best not only while in college but after. Also, thank you for grading me accordingly and reminding me that I can always do better. Thank you for knowing me by name and not a number, for treating me as an equal and teaching me the important things in life and college. And lastly, thank you for making my college experience memorable and one that will inspire my days to come.

The World After College

Now post grad, often times I am asked what the best apart of college was. And for me, it was the professors and the people. Connections are the most important thing we have in this life. The real world is a scary and hard place, there is no doubt about that. But what I have truly learned is that our experiences truly shape who we are. I may not currently be on a career path that uses my degree directly, but that is okay. Because, at the end of the day, my college professors instilled in me the values of my degree and the importance of doing what I love.

If I could go back in time and go to college again, I would. Going to a small liberal arts school brought some of the most caring and helpful people and best experiences into my life. Being a Theatre and an English major taught me some major life lessons, as well as to be grateful for the people and things around me. Education is truly priceless. It is not just about getting that piece of paper at the end of four years but it is about making those four years a part of the rest of your life. So when I walk back onto campus and into an old classroom or work building, I am greeted with hugs and excitement. Because at Adrian College, you are not just a student paying for college tuition, you are a member of something greater, a family.

Once again, thank you to my college professors. Thank you for not giving up on me, for telling me like it is, and for becoming not only my professor but my friend. And for that, I will ever be grateful.
